The Mystery of Gjakove

When I asked a Kosovar friend to tell me about Gjakove, she shrugged and explained that the people there are all selfish and strange. The way people poke fun at it in Mitrovica made me expect to step off the bus in hickville. Gjakove, what a pleasant surprise. The best old town we have seen thus far in Kosovo.

Why does the town have such a bad reputation? It seems to have so much going for it, and much more diversity than Mitrovica. A vital new and old town, a mix of religions, a view of breathtaking mountains, hip cafes, proximity to other major cities…what’s not to like about Gjakove? It’s a mystery to me.
